Print, black & white, 8" x 10", Women in Salvation Army uniforms standing on a stage, one women is shaking hands with a man in a Salvation Army uniform. On the back is written in ink by Joyce Winters, "Territorial Speakers' Contest, November 18, 1950, Advanced Contestants, Carol Watson, Juanita Furman, Joyce Thomson shaking hands with Comm. Norman Marshall, Jewel Shawn + Harry Webb" Winters included a typed note which applies to all the Invitational Speakers Contest photos and wrote, "I'm not sure how much information is in the files about the Territorial Speakers' Contest. I believe they started in 1945-1946, and continued into the early '50s. A subject was given on which the young people were to speak, and I think the time limit was at least 8 minutes and not more than 10. The idea was to have a Corps contest and the winner would to the Territorial. There were categories-I'm not sure about ages, but I think I have them accurate: Junior Division-14-16 years Senior Division-17-19 years Advanced- 20-to 24 or 25 After having won first place you could no longer enter in that division, but had to move up to the next division regardless of age. 1946-I won the Junior Territorial Contest, 1948- I won the Senior Territorial Contest (I don't remember the awards) 1949- Wes Morris won first place in Advanced, I won second which was a Scholarship to CBLI. I attended and met my future husband (then) Lieutenant Wally Winters 1950- I won the Advanced pictured here with a picture of my trophy. Just eight years ago, while down-sizing I just threw the trophy away. Can you believe it? I had carried it all these years." |
